Downpours in Gujarat, Karnataka; patchy rains in north India NEW DELHI: Eight people perished in heavy rains that pounded Gujarat, Kerala and Karnataka even as the monsoon remained feeble and erratic in the northern belt which endured muggy weather today owing to high humidity and rising temperatures.
Major rivers in Karnataka burst their banks as the rain fury threw normal life out of gear at many places claiming eight more lives pushing the state-wide death toll in the past one week to 17.
In rain-battered Kodagu district, schools and colleges were shut for two more days as the water level of rivers and Krishnarajsagar dam rose perilously.
Heavy rains lashed the northern part of Kerala triggering landslides prompting the state government to press into action the National Disaster Rescue Force to tackle the situation.
Rains continued to pelt Gujarat where nearly 850 families in Junagadh district, the hardest hit, were evacuated to safer places.
The southwest monsoon was yet to pick up strength in North India which received scattered showers as mercury rose at many places with hight humidity leaving citizens sweating.
