Mayor bungalow's wall collapses in high tide, 200 evacuated

MUMBAI: A high tide of 5.01 metres hit the shores of this metropolis on Thursday accompanied by strong gusty winds but Mumbaikars heaved a sigh

of relief as there were no heavy rains which the authorities felt could have worsened the situation.

But, the strong gusty winds at the time of high tide saw a wall collapse at Mayor Shubha Raul's bungalow in Shivaji Park at 1435 hours. There were no reports of injuries and nearly 200 people across the city were evacuated to safer places.

"The wall collapsed at the time of high tide due to gusty winds. We all were lucky enough that there was no heavy rainfall today or else the situation have been worst as the high tide was above 5 metre," Raul said.

The Met officials said that as per the civic body, the two days - July 23 and July 24 - when high tide of above 5 metre are expected to hit the shores of the city, chances of heavy rains are very less.

"Today there was minimal rainfall, Colaba recorded less than 1 cm and Santacruz recorded 1.7 cm. The rainfall between 12 cm and 25 cm is considered very heavy. There is less likelihood of heavy rainfall on Friday as well and there is no need to worry," Dr R V Sharma, Deputy Director General of India Meteorological Department told PTI.

�The forecast for the next 48 hours will be spells of rain or showers with possibility of heavy rains in some areas with strong gusty winds,� Sharma said. The Met officials have maintained that chances of extreme rainfall were very less in next 24 hours.
