If you were living on Arthur Road in Mumbai, you'd like to wake up in the morning, sip tea in the veranda as you pore over the morning papers. That's what Ajmal Kasab, the newest celebrity resident of Arthur Road, albeit its jail, wants to do. He has also demanded perfume to clear the air around him and wants back the money that his Pakistani terror trainers had packed into his rucksack before they sent him off on a murderous sail to Mumbai. This is the latest pantomime that is unfolding in the trial of one of independent India's most macabre terror attacks. Why does the justice system turn everything into a prolonged circus that serves no one, the victims or the perpetrators? No one is suggesting kangaroo courts and summary trials. But delays don't translate into justice. By all reckoning, Kasab's is an open and shut case. So why not get on with it and reach the inevitable end. Why keep a man, who's a ticking time bomb, in the centre of the country's busiest area, causing hardships to residents there. The justice system predictably flounders. On one hand, it will dance endlessly around the periphery of cases like 26/11 and on the other hand it will throw people like Binayak Sen, the doctor and social activist in Chhattisgarh, into the slammer on unsubstantiated charges of Naxal links. So let us all remain mute spectators again as another trial drags on, leaving the victims' families without closure and their scars hurting... Regards Shail |
