:|: MHO :|: We become gods in democracy

We become gods in democracy

ONCE
in five years I feel like a god.
Or
 rather every time there is
a general elections.

Of course,
that's true during the Assembly elections too.

So how did I feel this time round,
in the run-up to the polling?
 A large number of candidates
 were seeking my favour.
They were offering,
through all kinds of means,
 their obeisance to me.
They offered penitence for the sins
committed over the last five years and prior to that too.

They were ardently seeking my forgiveness,
 and they were praying,
with such apparent sincerity,
to be absolved of all their sins.
 They, through their manifestos,
were trying to express their resolutions for the future.
Resolutions drawn with the best of intentions.
They were seeking to do everything for
the citizens based on the most lofty of ideals.

From where and how were these ideas and ideals
that were hidden all along suddenly spring up?
Only
they will be able to reveal it,
if perchance they are willing to.

How did they approach me?
In person, through rallies,
through flyers and handouts,
and through the media, both print and electronic.
And the approach was outrageously loud.
Sometimes their extra presence
in my space was even bugging.
I would sit down to listen to some nice music,
for instance, on an FM channel
and there they would arrive once again,
on air, bombarding me with their lofty ideals.
 And worse
they came and complained about the others,
the others who were also seeking my favour.
They were forgetting sayings such as:
 'Those who live in glasshouses
should not throw stones at others'.

I waited,
 and waited patiently allowing them
 to employ whatever means they
wish to for cajoling me, for entreating me.
Then they gave me one free day.
I don't really know
if I needed a quiet day to make my decision about their fate.

And then came the Day of Judgment.

The day of voting.

And so I walked down to the polling booth,
not minding the heat. It was hot,
for it was post-11 in the morning in the month of May.

Then I stood before the EVM,
the electronic voting machine.
All those names stared at me with their symbols.
With hope and expectation.
 For what?
Then I pressed the button and a red light gleamed.
Done.
Her/his fate was sealed,
as far as I was concerned.

I liberated all the other candidates.

Only the one against whom the red light
 gleamed was trapped.
S/he, in my reckoning,
needed to do something out here.

Of course,
I realised that
what they were all seeking during
all that time of entreating and praying
was to get trapped.
They were not seeking mukti,
salvation, that we seek of god.

A summation of the decisions of so many gods
across the country will ultimately decide
 who will form the government.

Or at least we assume so.

And then?
Well, the tables will turn dramatically.
All those who sought our favour and
who won will become powerful gods for the next five years.
Commanding every power.
And we, the mass of electorate,
 will become the meek ones.
To become gods once again after five years.

But there is nothing to complain.

Thanks to India being a democracy
at least we become gods once in a while,
 isn't it?
