Gentlemen,
Hello ! I must have received nothing less than maybe 65 - 75 replies, in reply to my mail titled, " The Real Story on Hinduism ".
There have been quite a few sensible, responsible, and mature replies from decent Muslim gentlemen, in the above. I was glad to read those. I must especially recognise and thank the following gentlemen for having written their point of view - politely, though I may have a difference of opinion on a few minor points :
Apart from the above, there have been many hate-mails to me, from Muslim members. Some crude, some stating white lies, some amusingly threatening and some downright vulgar. I have enclosed a few of those too under this mail of mine - so that all of you can see the true nature of the individuals. Compare their contents, with my earlier articles and you will know in your conscience, what is right and what is wrong. I shall neither dignify the vulgar and abusive mails, nor will I give importance to them, by replying to their meaningless prattle ! They deserve to be sent to my on-line trash can - which I have done !!!
But let me refer and comment upon the views expressed in the logical mails from the decent gentlemen. Following are my comments to those :
I am surprised that many of you have taken my views, as anti-Islamic ! No. Not at all. Gentlemen, you are mistaken here.
If you read all my earlier mails, you will note that I have repeatedly stressed that, I have a great respect for Islam, as much as I respect all the other great religions of this world - including Hinduism. Any religion which propagates peace, spirituality and care for other human beings, is most certainly worthy of respect. Having quite a few decent and educated Muslim friends in my real life, I have had an opportunity to hear and read, a bit about some of the Islamic tenets. Hence, I have certainly understood that Islam is one of the great religions of this world.
I am also surprised that so many of you - the Muslim members, seem to have got annoyed, just because I stated facts on terrorists, who keep massacring innocent women, children and men ! Some members have even shown their true colours and beliefs, by justifying such killings, under various illogical pretexts ! I am not only amused, but confused at such psyche !
Let me clarify once again - my debate or criticism, is not against the religion of Islam, at all.
1. My criticism and dislike, is for those people, who pretend to be " Good Muslims " and who continue to manipulate Islam, to achieve their own selfish and psychopathic goals in life. I am referring to the horrible scum, who finance, train and In-doctrinate young Muslim children and youth, to succesfully create in-human terrorists - all in the name of Islam. These are the people within the Muslim community, that any and all logical decent Muslims should beware ! Not me !
2. My criticism and dislike is for people like the power-hungry Muslim politicians, power-hungry Arab Kings, power-hungry Pakistani and Bangla-Deshi army generals, power-hungry Presidents of countries, who nurture, train and arm terrorists - and use them to achieve power, or maintain themselves in power.
3. My criticism and dislike is for people like the crooked ..... Imaams, Qazis, Mullahs etc, who bizarrely twist and turn the good humanitarian teachings of Islam, to suit their own mad-dictats to justify massacres of innocents - just to ensure their own importance.
4. My criticism and dislike is for some of the decent and educated members of the Muslim community, who have kept totally silent and allowed all these above crooks to being dis-repute to Islam and genuinely decent Muslims.
In reality, genuine and good Muslims have the power to at least reduce and expose these terrorists and their handlers, by taking the right firm steps, through their respective religious bodies. It is because of the fact, that the majority of them have not done so - these above crooks have hijacked Islam to such an extent, that one is forced to think that, there is a true and good Islam from Allah and perhaps there is a different Islam from the Mullahs !
Of-course most youngsters have been brainwashed by the Mullahs and Imaams on the so called " Israeli atrocities ", being the reason for terrorist massacres. Let us be realistic. What have non-Arabic Muslims got to do with atrocities by Israel ? The Arabs have to have the initiative, intelligence and shrewdness to handle Israel, themselves !
We have to fight our own battles, not expect others to come and fight our battles. And our battle should be against - illiteracy, poverty, un-employment, social evils, food shortage, water shortage, shelter etc etc. These " battles " itself will last us a life time. We do not need to fight battles for others. And we certainly do not need to fight battles for Arabs !!!
Why have the terrorists, who claim and pretend to be " True Muslims " massacred thousands and thousands of innocents in countries like India, Thailand, Philipines, Malaysia, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Chechnya, Russia, Macedonia, Bosnia, Serbia etc etc ? How does planting a bomb in a bus, flying planes into major commercial centres, randomly spraying bullets in a crowded railway stations, beheading innocent journalists, or randomly killing people in hotels, become retaliation for the so called Israeli atrocities ? Would such massacres solve the palestinian issue ? Is this not downright stupid ?
I do not pretend to be a religious scholar. Certainly not. Yes, I have read a bit about Hinduism and Christianity. I have also read a few " suras " in the Quran. Whatever I have read, from whichever religious scriptures, I have found them quite fair and quite good for its followers.
Some of my Muslim friends have proved to be genuinely caring human beings. So many Muslims have been genuine patriots in the Indian freedom struggle - Maulana Azad, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Badshah Khan etc. Take the example of one of modern India's greatest current sons - President Abdul Kalaam. He will put to shame almost all the current Indian Hindu and Muslim politicians ! I adore him. Like others, I not only adore such great Muslims, but bow my head to them out of deep respect.
Hence, like I wrote earlier, I repeat that I have respect for Islam and for genuine and decent Muslims. But, that does not mean that I have to be blind and accept all that is dished out in the name of Islam, by crooked Mullahs and terrorists. Being an educated and proud Indian, there is no way of God, in which I am going to meekly accept some inhuman animals, massacring innocents, in the name of religion. I have a right to talk about this wrong. I just hope that every citizen of this great country, finds time to talk about these crimes and act, to cleanse our country of this " imported " disease !!!
Yes, I am a Hindu woman. A Hindu woman, proud to be born a Hindu. That does not mean that I am blind to the evils in my own religion. A lot of you, have given critical references to these so called " Babas " ! You are not making me angry. You are only making me amused by writing this. Let me assure you gentlemen, that almost none of the educated Hindus, or even the semi-educated Hindus, have any belief in these so called idotic Hindu priests and Babas. We despise these pretenders. It is only the illiterate villagers who may still believe in the nonsense dished out by these Hindu crooks. The majority of Hindus, simply do not follow any Baba. We practise Hinduism, based upon teachings by our own families.
One point that I must stress in Hinduism ( and even a few other religions ), more for the knowledge of members is that, in our religions, there is no force and no coercion on any follower. If there are certain parameters of Hinduism which we do not agree to - then no one will force us. We are free. If we do not like a certain priest, we are more than free to ask him to go to hell, with his so called teachings. If we do not agree to a certain guideline laid down in our religion, we are free to not follow that. Just as an example - let me point out - So many of you, would have have seen Hindu brahmin's heartily eating non-vegetarian food. No one will " behead " them in India !
Gentlemen, I agree with most of you, that we must exchange ideas and opinions with respect. But I do not agree with the suggestions by many members, to Mr. Boon, requesting such mails to be banned. We are human beings with a mind. Not Ostriches, to bury our head in the sand. The world is in a major mess, due to religious conflicts. Conflicts should be resolved by discussions. And being human beings, if we discuss this openly and frankly ( yes - decently ) maybe we can raise some awareness. And if by raising that awareness, this MHO community is able to save even one life, then in my opinion, all of us would have done our duty to ourselves and even to God !

So be sensible in your arguments. A lie or a wrong practice cannot be deemed as true and correct because it is followed by majority of people; A really shahid is an idiot for writing such stuff. Hinduism is not a religion, it refers to the group of cultures followed by the people living in India, beyond the river sind or Indus. Hind was first coined by the persians and the Arabs for referring to the people living beyond the river sind.

Argue in the most beautiful ways and come to common terms that there is only one God - Allah. Which even the hindus(excuse for using this term as - it refers to all the people irrespective of religion living in India, as it is a geographical description not a religious one, but used commonly to refer people of the Sanatan Dharm).
Be wise act wisely. No religious scripture present on the face of this world has spoken about more than one God. All preach only one God, people of understanding whom Allah has guideth can only realise not all.

"Beware on the Day of Judgment, I shall, myself, be the accuser against him who wrongs a non-Muslim citizen (of a Muslim State) or Lays on him a responsibility greater than he can bear, or deprives him of anything that belongs to him."
History provides many examples of Muslims' respect towards other faiths. For instance, prior to the Spanish Inquisition, Jews and Christians lived and prospered in Spain for centuries under Muslim rule. Another well known example is when Omar, the second successor to Prophet Muhammad, entered Jerusalem. He refused to pray inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. He was concerned that some overzealous Muslim in the future might destroy the Church and build a Mosque in his honor.

WHY IS ISLAM OFTEN MISUNDERSTOOD ?
In today's turbulent world, Islam is often on the front page - mostly for the wrong reasons. Islam means peace; yet some have taken this peaceful way of life and hijacked it into a violent way, and distorted their ideology for personal and political gains. Islam is sometimes, intentionally misrepresented. Some politicians, religious leaders and media have found an ideal scapegoat in Islam. By associating Islam with the inhumane acts of a handful, they have been successful in driving larger numbers of people to vote for them; to donate towards their ministries; and to read their newspapers, watch their television programs and listen to their radio shows.
However, with an increasing number of Muslims speaking out against this falsehood; the true and peaceful nature of Islam is becoming more evident. Muslims are standing up against terrorism, against the persecution and killing of innocent people, and against those who perpetrate such injustice in the name of any faith.
The very word "Islam" means peace. A fifth of the world's population is reclaiming this peace as their chosen way of life.
I HOPE BOTH SIDE IS BETTER UNDERSTAND, AND AGAIN I REQUEST YOU TO ALL STOP FIGHT AND COMMENTS ON SUCH THINGS WHICH REALY DESTROY OUR ONENESS AND FRIENDSHIP . DON'T APPRICIATE THOS PEOPLES WHO IS ARGUING AND FIGHTING ON SUCH TOPICS . IF I SAID ANY THING WRONG PLEASE FORGIVE ME

I really appreciate your expiations about Hinduism.
I feel proud as a hindu and on Hinduism, not just because I am a hindu, because Hinduism teaches us to be a human. Concept of Great HINDUSIM is Wasudhaiw Katumbam (pura vishw ek pariwar hai) and sarwe bhawantu sukhinum, Sarwe santu niramayah ( Sabhi log shuki ho aur sabhi log swath ho).
Jo log hame hamari RAMANYAN aur MAHABHARAT ko review karne ki baat karte hai unhe phle apne andar dekhana chahiye. Gujrat dango ki baat karne walo ko pahle is baat ke bare me sochana chahiye ki ye situation kaise aai, iski starting kaha se hui. Ayodhya mamle ki me main sirf y kahna chunga ki aap hame ye bata de ki waha pe jo masjid hai uska nam BABARI MASJID kyo hai, aap ko aap ka jawab mil jayega.

Want such eye opener articles to realise the fact. Those who spreading terrorism all over world, they are teaching us what terrorism is? i can talk non stop about non Muslim terrorism giving instances from the happenings in India which have been forgotten and buried just coz they are non Muslim elements.
Hinduism is a religion which i respect and by god i refrain from making passes which provoke people and their sentiments...but hey why don't the others think on those lines? i fail to understand. we have had carnage's like the Sikh massacre during the 80"s i guess its forgotten becoz Muslims were not related to that.....now this ma frens i call bias at its freaking peak. others have an equal amount of woes committed as the so called Islamic terrorists....the godhra garnage my oh my the tainted scene pregnant women being slit open alive and the foetuses burnt.. this is brutality at its peak!!!! i am not here to point fingers and give references from my religious books for if i do it trust me i can prove myself 1000% true in what i mention by referring or citing from my books.

I think, we all boosting just the terrorism... can one please tell me why are we fighting for??? Agreed to your comment below. I had also mentioned in my earlier mail about not criticizing any religion nor using abusive language to any individual, just because your thoughts are different form the others.
Owner's of MHO group should not upload the mail, which uses any kind of abusive language nor any mail which is hurting the sentiments about any individual or any religion.
Yes, definately disucss any issue, to improve your knowledge & to know what is going around the world.
Mails sent by Shahid and Jayashree are really disheartening. Folks as long as the debate is healthy it's fine, once it goes beyond the ethics, it should be stopped.
Any conclusion about any topic should consider the following points in order to understand the nature of the subject:
a) Recaptitulate all the background about the topic
b) If not a thorough, atleast little in-depth analysis
c) Be completely unbiased, considering yourself a third party, who is not related to the topic at all.
d) Understand the nature of the situation at the time the incident happened & the thought process of people during that era/period
e) And above all, root cause analysis of the scenario, meaning why, where, how, when did this happened, under what situation.
If the root cause analysis is done properly, then we will get an answer which will be correct to quite an extent.
Apart from the points, you can include a lot of other points as well.
Guys, please do let me know if I have missed any other points. I would really appreciate your comments on the above & do share your thoughts, so that even I may gain some knowledge from you.

Firstly i will introduce myself i am an Indian, a civil engineer from India, presently working in Dubai.( fed up with the current India situation where corrupt people using poor people on the name of religion, caste, state, etc)

According to the Qur'an, war represents an "unwanted obligation" which has to be carried out with strict observance of particular humane and moral guidelines and which must not be resorted to except when it is absolutely inevitable.
In one Qur'anic verse, it is explained that those who start wars are the disbelievers and that God does not approve of wars:
…Each time they kindle the fire of war, God extinguishes it. They rush about the earth corrupting it. God does not love corrupters. (Qur'an, 5:64)
In the case of a conflict, before engaging in a war, believers must wait until fighting becomes compulsory. Believers are allowed to fight only when the other party attacks and no other alternative except war remains:
But if they cease (fighting), God is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Qur'an, 2:192)
A closer examination of the Prophet Muhammad's life reveals that war was a method resorted for defensive purposes only in unavoidable situations.
The revelation of the Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad continued for a period of 23 years. During the first 13 years of this period, Muslims lived as a minority under a pagan order in Mecca and faced much oppression. Many Muslims were harassed, abused, tortured, and even murdered, their houses and possessions plundered. Despite this, however, Muslims led their lives without resorting to violence and always called the pagans to peace.
When the oppression of the pagans escalated unbearably, the Muslims emigrated to the town of Yathrib, which was later to be renamed Madinah, where they could establish their own order in a freer and more friendly environment. Even establishing their own system did not prompt them to take up weapons against the aggressive pagans of Mecca. Only after the following revelation, the Prophet commanded his people to prepare for war:
Permission to fight is given to those who are fought against because they have been wronged - truly God has the power to come to their support - those who were expelled from their homes without any right, merely for saying, "Our Lord is God"… (Qur'an, 22:39-40)
In brief, Muslims were allowed to wage war only because they were oppressed and subjected to violence. To put it in another way, God granted permission for war only for defensive purposes. In other verses, Muslims are warned against the use of unnecessary provocation or violence:
Fight in the Way of God against those who fight you, but do not go beyond the limits. God does not love those who go beyond the limits. (Qur'an, 2:190)
After the revelation of these verses, several wars occurred between the Muslims and the pagan Arabs. In none of these wars, however, were the Muslims the inciting party. Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad established a secure and peaceful social environment for Muslims and pagans alike by signing the peace agreement of Hudaybiya which conceded to the pagans most of their requests. The party who violated the terms of the agreement and started hostilities once again were the pagans. With rapid conversions into Islam, the Islamic armies mustered a great force against the pagan Arabs. However, Muhammad conquered Mecca without bloodshed and in a spirit of tolerance. If he wished, Muhammad could have taken revenge on pagan leaders in the city. Yet, he did not do harm to any one of them, forgave them and treated them with the utmost tolerance. In the words of John Esposito, a Western expert on Islam, "eschewing vengeance and the plunder of conquest, the Prophet instead accepted a settlement, granting amnesty rather than wielding the sword toward his former enemies." 2
Pagans, who would later convert to Islam of their own free will, could not help admiring such nobility of character in the Prophet.
Not only during Mecca's conquest, but also in the course of all the battles and conquests made in the time of the Prophet Muhammad, the rights of innocent and defenceless people were meticulously protected. The Prophet Muhammad reminded believers numerous times about this subject and by his own practice became a role model for others to follow. Indeed, he addressed believers who were about to go to war in the following terms: "Go to war in adherence to the religion of God. Never touch the elderly, women or children. Always improve their situation and be kind to them. God loves those who are sincere." The Messenger of God also clarified the attitude Muslims must adopt even when they are in the middle of a raging battle:
Do not kill children. Avoid touching people who devote themselves to worship in churches! Never murder women and the elderly. Do not set trees on fire or cut them down. Never destroy houses!
The Islamic principles God proclaims in the Qur'an account for this peaceful and temperate policy of the Prophet Muhammad. In the Qur'an, God commands believers to treat the non-Muslims kindly and justly:
God does not forbid you from being good to those who have not fought you over religion or driven you from your homes, or from being just towards them. God loves those who are just. God merely forbids you from taking as friends those who have fought you over religion and driven you from your homes and who supported your expulsion... (Qur'an, 60:8-9)
The verses above clarify how Muslims should behave towards non-Muslims: A Muslim should treat all non-Muslims kindly and only avoid making friends with those who show enmity towards Islam. In a case where this enmity causes violent attacks against Muslims, that is, where they wage a war against them, then Muslims should respond to them justly by considering the humane dimensions of the situation. All forms of barbarism, unnecessary acts of violence and unjust aggression are forbidden by Islam. In another verse, God warns Muslims against this and explains that rage felt towards enemies should not cause them to fall into injustice:
You who believe! Show integrity for the sake of God, bearing witness with justice. Do not let hatred for a people incite you into not being just. Be just. That is closer to heedfulness. Heed God (alone). God is aware of what you do. (Qur'an, 5:8)
The Meaning of the Concept of "Jihad"
Another concept that deserves clarification due in the context of our discussion is that of "jihad".
The exact meaning of "Jihad" is "effort". Thus, in Islam, "to carry out jihad" is "to show effort, to struggle". The Prophet Muhammad explained that "the greatest jihad is the one a person carries out against his lower soul". What is meant by "lower soul" here is selfish desires and ambitions.
Assessed from the Qur'anic point of view, the word "jihad" can also mean a struggle carried out on intellectual grounds against those who oppress people, treat them unjustly, subject them to torture and cruelty and violate legitimate human rights. The purpose of this struggle is to bring about justice, peace and equality.
Apart from these ideological and spiritual meanings, struggle in the physical sense is also considered as "jihad". However, as explained above, this has to be a struggle carried out solely for defensive purposes. The use of the concept of "jihad" for acts of aggression against innocent people, that is for terror, would be unjust and a great distortion of the true meaning of the term.
Killing Oneself (Committing Suicide) is Forbidden in the Qur'an
Another important matter that arose in the wake of the latest terrorist assaults against the United States is that of suicide attacks. Some people who are ill-informed on Islam have made utterly erroneous statements to the effect that this religion of peace allows suicide attacks, whereas in Islam killing oneself and killing other people are both prohibited. In the words, "Do not kill yourselves." (Qur'an, 4:29) God has declared suicide to be a sin. In Islam it is forbidden for anyone to kill himself or herself, for no matter what reason.
The Prophet reveals suicide to be a sin in a parable, when he says that those who commit suicide will be punished:
Indeed, whoever (intentionally) kills himself, then certainly he will be punished in the Fire of Hell, wherein he shall dwell forever.
As this makes clear, committing suicide, and thus carrying out suicide attacks, and causing the deaths of thousands of innocent people while doing so, is a total violation of Islamic morality. God says in the Qur'an that it is a sin to put an end to one's own life. For that reason, it is quite impossible for someone who believes in God and says he abides by the Qur'an to do such a thing. The only people who can do such things are those who have a very mistaken perception of religion, have no idea of true Qur'anic morality, fail to use their reason and conscience, are under the influence of atheist ideologies, and who have been brainwashed with feelings of hatred and revenge. Everybody must oppose such actions
Compassion, Tolerance and Humanity in the History of Islam
To sum up the facts we have seen so far, we can say that the political doctrine of Islam (in other words, Islamic rules and principles regarding political matters) is exceedingly moderate and peace-loving. This truth is accepted by many non-Muslim historians and theologians. One of these is the British historian Karen Armstrong, a former nun and an expert on Middle East history. In her book Holy War, which examines the history of the three divine religions, she makes the following comments:
... The word 'Islam' comes from the same Arabic root as the word 'peace' and the Qur'an condemns war as an abnormal state of affairs opposed to God's will… Islam does not justify a total aggressive war of extermination… Islam recognises that war is inevitable and sometimes a positive duty in order to end oppression and suffering. The Qur'an teaches that war must be limited and be conducted in as humane a way as possible. Mohammad had to fight not only the Meccans but also the Jewish tribes in the area and Christian tribes in Syria who planned on offensive against him in alliance with the Jews. Yet this did not make Mohammed denounce the People of the Book. His Muslims were forced to defend themselves but they were not fighting a 'holy war' against the religion of their enemies. When Mohammad sent his freedman Zaid against the Christians at the head of a Muslim army, he told them to fight in the cause of God bravely but humanely. They must not molest priests, monks and nuns nor the weak and helpless people who were unable to fight. There must be no massacre of civilians nor should they cut down a single tree nor pull down any building.
After the death of the Prophet, the Caliphs who succeeded him were also very sensitive in exercising justice. In conquered countries, both the indigenous people and the newcomers led their lives in peace and security. Abu Bakr, the first Caliph, demanded his people adopt just and tolerant attitudes in these lands. All these attitudes were in compliance with the values of the Qur'an. Abu Bakr gave the following command to his army before the first Syrian expedition:
Stop, O people, that I may give you ten rules to keep by heart: Do not commit treachery, nor depart from the right path. You must not mutilate, neither kill a child or aged man or woman. Do not destroy a palm tree, nor burn it with fire and do not cut any fruitful tree. You must not slay any of the flock or herds or the camels, save for your subsistence. You are likely to pass by people who have devoted their lives to monastic services; leave them to that to which they have devoted their lives. You are likely, likewise, to find people who will present to you meals of many kinds. You may eat; but do no forget to mention the name of Allah.
Umar ibn al-Khattab, who succeeded Abu Bakr, was famous for the way he exercised justice and made contracts with the indigenous people of the conquered countries. Each one of these contracts proved to be an example of tolerance and justice. For instance, in his declaration granting protection to Christians in Jerusalem and Lod, he ensured that churches would not be demolished and guaranteed that Muslims would not worship in churches in groups. Umar granted the same conditions to the Christians of Bethlehem. During the conquest of Medain, the declaration of protection given to the Nestorian Patriarch Isho'yab III (650 - 660 AD) again guaranteed that churches would not be demolished and that no building would be converted into a house or a mosque. The letter written by the patriarch to the bishop of Fars (Persia) after the conquest is most striking, in the sense that it depicts the tolerance and compassion shown by Muslim rulers to the People of the Book in the words of a Christian:
The Arabs to whom God has given at this time the government of the world... do not persecute the Christian religion. Indeed, they favour it, honour our priests and the saints of the Lord and confer benefits on churches and monasteries.
All these are very important examples revealing the understanding of justice and tolerance of true believers. In a verse God commands the following:
God commands you to return to their owners the things you hold on trust and, when you judge between people, to judge with justice. How excellent is what God exhorts you to do! God is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. (Qur'an, 4:58)
Canon Taylor, one of the mission leaders of the Anglican Church, expresses the beauty revealed by the Islamic morality in one of his speeches as follows:
It [Islam] brought out the fundamental dogmas of religion - the unity and greatness of God, that He is merciful and righteous, that He claims obedience to His will, resignation and faith. It proclaimed the responsibility of man, a future life, a day of judgment, and stern retribution to fall upon the wicked; and enforced the duties of prayer, almsgiving, fasting and benevolence. It thrust aside the artificial virtues, the religious frauds and follies, the perverted moral sentiments, and the verbal subtleties of theological disputants… It gave hope to the slave, brotherhood to mankind, and recognition to the fundamental facts of human nature.
The false assertion that people in conquered countries converted to Islam under threat has also been disproved by Western researchers, and the justice and tolerant attitude of Muslims has been confirmed. L.Browne, a Western researcher, expresses this situation in the following words:
Incidentally these well-established facts dispose of the idea so widely fostered in Christian writings that the Muslims, wherever they went, forced people to accept Islam at the point of the sword.
In his book The Prospects of Islam, Browne goes on to say that the real motive behind the Muslims' conquests was the brotherhood of Islam. The vast majority of Muslim administrators who have reigned over the Muslim lands throughout history continued to treat the members of other religions with the utmost tolerance and respect. Within the borders of all Islamic states, both Jews and Christians lived in safety and enjoyed freedom.
Georgetown University's Professor of Religion and International Relations John L. Esposito describes how Jews and Christians who came under the administration of Muslim states met with enormous tolerance:
Muslim armies proved to be formidable conquerors and effective rulers, builders rather than destroyers. They replaced the indigenous rulers and armies of the conquered countries, but preserved much of their goverment, bureaucracy, and culture. For many in the conquered territories, it was no more than an exchange of masters, one that brought peace to peoples demoralized and disaffected by the casualties and heavy taxation that resulted from the years of Byzantine-Persian warfare. Local communities were free to continue to follow their own way of life in internal, domestic affairs. In many ways, local populations found Muslim rule more flexible and tolerant than that of Byzantium and Persia. Religious communities were free to practice their faith - to worship and be governed by their religious leaders and laws in such areas as marriage, divorce, and inheritance. In exchange, they were required to pay tribute, a poll tax (jizya) that entitled them to Muslim protection from outside aggression and exempted them from military service. They were therefore called the ''protected ones'' (dhimmmi). In effect, this often meant lower taxes, grater local autonomy, rule by fellow Semites with closer linguistic and cultural ties than the hellenized, Greco-Roman elites of Byzantium, and greater religious freedom for Jews and indigenous Christians. Most of the Christian churches, such as the Nestorians, Monophysites, Jacobites, and Copts, had been persecuted as heretics and schismatics by Christian orthodoxy. For these reasons, some Jewish and Christian communities aided the invading armies, regarding them as less oppressive than their imperial masters. In many ways, the conquests brought a Pax Islamica to an embattled area.
As is clear from these facts, Muslims have at no time in history been oppressive. On the contrary, they have brought peace and security to all nations and beliefs wherever they have gone. They have abided by God's verse which says: "Worship God and do not associate anything with Him. Be good to your parents and relatives and to orphans and the very poor, and to neighbours who are related to you and neighbours who are not related to you, and to companions and travellers and your slaves. God does not love anyone vain or boastful." (Qur'an, 4:36) and have behaved well to all people.
In short, friendship, brotherhood, peace and love are the bases of Qur'anic morality, and it is to these superior virtues that Muslims try to adhere.
