After 19 years of being in prison, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's killer Nalini Sreeharan might walk free today (March 11).

The Madras High Court will receive the controversial advisory board report on Nalini's premature release today.

The Prison Board had submitted its recommendation report to the Tamil Nadu government.

The state government's counsel had asked for a 2-week adjournment after it received the report; however, the High Court rejected the request and directed the government to produce the report today.

The Advocate General would most probably submit the report in a sealed envelope as the state would like to keep the report confidential till it takes a decision on the issue.

According to reports, the advisory board has recommended Nalini's premature release. The State Government had earlier said that it will not take any decision without consulting the Centre.

Nalini Sreeharan was one of the accomplices in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination and had accompanied the other assassins to Sriperumbudur.

She is the wife of a LTTE member known as Murugan. Nalini has been in prison since the last 19 years and has sent many petitions for seeking her premature release.

Nalini Sreeharan has been convicted on 16 counts of murder, and found guilty in Section 302 of Indian Penal Code on all 16 counts. She has also been convicted under Section 3 of TADA and Section 120-B of IPC, dealing with conspiracy.

Nalini had filed a petition in the Madras High Court asking for the Tamil Nadu government to convene the advisory board to consider her case for release from the jail. In her petition, Nalini had said that she was entitled for release in 2005 itself as she had completed 14 years in jail. In 2007, the state government had rejected her application for release and she had then filed a case in the Madras High Court in 2008.
