Re: :|: MHO :|: Monumental waste: Rs 350 cr Chhatrapati Shivaji statue

Hi Shail,

Is there anything we can do and stop the govt. from spending such a huge amount for activities like this, which are not at all necessary, when there many other issues requires the govt, immediate attention and action.

NOTHING ....... we can just be a spectator and  grumble among ourselve... these politicians will never understand the difference between  "need" and "want" as long as they are politicians. The history has witnessed the same in 1942, 1980 and still continues .....

WE CANT CHANGE THEM....  CAN WE??????????????

Warm Regards,
Usha Ganeshan

Offcourse at the moment putting money in monuments is a waste.

Let me put some facts first rather than being emotional about all this..

At present there are total
221 taalukas in 27 districts are in grip of drought crisis,40 farmer suicides and 3,000 child malnutrition deaths

Is it nothing for us guys??????

In Marathwada, a cropless kharif season is looming.. Farmers are left with empty fields even as government relief measures are yet to pour in.

Sixteen out of Maharashtra's 34 districts have hit a serious dry patch, with less than 50 per cent of the rainfall they usually get by this time each year.

For a farmer Sakharam Chalke no rain means no work. With a crop loan of 50000 rupees, Chalke has no choice but to default. "There is a farmer's saying, mother does not allow begging and father does not give enough to eat. Similarly we are caught between the government and nature," he says.

Karim from Latur district had hoped of a good crop. During the recent fertilizer shortage, he waited for 3 days to get 4 bags of fertilizer. Seeds and fertilizer worth 7000 rupees now lie unused in his house. The farmer, who belongs to the Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh's constituency, now plans to migrate to Pune.

People who are in favor of Monuments at the time of crisis are requested to go to Wikipedia or Google and search for the term "DROUGHT" . May be then people can understand what we are going to face in future.

Do you know how much was spent for bandra worli sea link ?

Rs 1600 crore and in just three days , there were holes on the road which was later constructed. So these high profile projects are actually another way of looting tax payers money.

Since the elections are coming , this is the only way Chavan Ji can earn political grounds just by making people emotional on this issue.

Feeling proud for our ancestors is never wrong , I am a Kshatriya and i respect Shivaji Ji more than anyone else here. But think of people who really need this money.Farmers are starving , dieing and left with no cattles and thier future is no where.

Don't be in an impression that we will not be effected as we are getting food materials from Big Bazar or Reliance Fresh, Its ultimately the farmers who are providing all this to us for which we should be thankful to them.If the root is not strog you can not expect a healthy fruit of the tree.Thats the reason , Farmers are moving away from agriculture and we are forced to buy essential commodities from outside India, The Irony here is that last year India had a record production of wheat and sugar.

This is like a man having two hands where one of his hand is rotten and needs serious attention from everyone, otherwise hand needs to be removed. Second hand has a gold chain . And he is proud of that.

Come On...Dont't be emotional, Shivaji Ji will never be angry if you put these 350 Crore of money for the welfare of those farmers who are loosing thier lifes.Come out of home and face the reality.

Regards
Shail

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday unveiled the digital design of a 300-foot statue of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji in Mumbai which would cost the state Rs 350 crore. That is rich for a state that is battling drought.

As many as 221 taalukas in 27 districts have been declared drought prone, more than 40 farmer suicides have taken place in the last three weeks and there have been reports of 3,000 child malnutrition deaths in tribal areas.

The statue will be constructed on an artificial island a kilometre away in the Arabian Sea off the Marin Lines-Chowpati shore of Mumbai. It will include a library, a museum and an amphitheatre and will rival New York's Statue of Liberty..

Newspapers report that the statue complex will have a revolving restaurant, viewing gallery, an auditorium, art galleries, food courts and green areas.

The state has sought Rs 11,000 crore form the Centre to fight drought across the state. Senior journalist Kumar Ketkar, editor of Marathi daily Loksatta, called the money being spent on the statue as wastage on "sheer civilizational glory".

"Maharashtra is going through the severest of drought conditions after 1972. Farmers are committing suicide--then there is total collapse of medical administration because of swine flu," he said.

"There are so many urgent issues, so why spend such a judge amount of money on sheer civilizational glory. Rs 350 crore is an underestimation because once it is built the frills along with it will come," said Ketkar.

Shail
