{M:H:O} World Press Photo Contest 2010

Joe Petersburger, a National Geographic based in Hungary, won the first prize in the Nature Singles category for this picture of a Hunting kingfisher. Pietro Masturzo, an Italian freelance photographer, won the World Press Photo of the Year 2009 award with this picture of women shouting in protest from a rooftop in Tehran, on 24 June. Jury chair Ayperi Karabuda Ecer said: �The photo shows the beginning of something, the beginning of a huge story. It adds perspectives to news. It touches you both visually and emotionally, and my heart went out to it immediately. Paul Nicklen, a National Geographic based in Canada, won the first prize Nature Stories for this picture taken in South Georgia, Antartica. Stefano De Luigi, a VII Network for Le Monde Magazine photographer based in Italy, won the second prize in the Contemporary Issues Singles category for this picture of a giraffe killed by drought, in northeast Kenya, September. Walter Astrada, an Agence France-Presse photographer based in Argentina, won the first prize in the Spot News Stories category for this picture titled �Bloodbath in Madagascar, taken on February 2009. Charles Ommanney, a Getty Images for Newsweek photographer based in Britain, won the first prize in the People in the News Stories category for this picture titled �Inauguration Day, taken in Washington DC, January 20, 2009. Mohammed Salem, a Reuters photographer based in the Gaza Strip, won the second prize in the Spot News Singles category of the World Press Photo of the Year 2009 with this picture of smoke rising during Israel's offensive in Gaza January 8, 2009. David Guttenfelder, a The Associated Press photographer based in the U.S., won the second prize in the People in the News Singles category for this picture of U.S. soldiers responding to Taliban fire outside their bunker, in Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, May 11, 2009. Marco Vernaschi, a Pulitzer Center photographer based in Italy, won the first prize in the General News Stories category for this picture taken in Guinea Bissau. Kent Klich, a photographer based in Sweden, won the first prize in the General News Singles category titled �Gaza photo album: Tuzzah, taken in the Gaza Strip, March. Donald Miralle, Jr., a photographer based in the U.S., won the first prize in the Sports Action Stories category for this picture of the Ironman World Championships, in Hawaii. Gareth Copley, a Press Association photographer based in Britain, won the first prize in the Sports Action Singles category for this picture of Englands Jonathan Trott is running out at the fifth Ashes test match, in London, August.
